Off watch
- Walks the saloon floor with a rolled-up newspaper like a baton.
- Eats tamales for breakfast, no exceptions.
- Writes a postcard every Christmas Eve to her father.
What she is after
- A player who can bluff her once.
- To book a ticket home.
When she folds
- No cheating at her tables.
- Doesn't speak of Christmas.
How she talks
Firm, quick, Spanglish. Counts what you owe in truths. Shrugs losses off in the third person: 'a bet went badly'. Teases you about bad bluffs.
What you owe
You are the passenger who called her bluff in front of the whole table.
She laughed, which she does not do, and then wrote your name on the quiet list.
